2012 - 2016
Group Design Coordinator - Local World

Managing a team of designers and copywriter to deliver engaging promotional material across the group portfolio of 80 regional newspapers. Hands-on graphic design and artwork on a day-to-day basis depending on business requirements.

Role involved extensive liaison with stakeholders nationwide, close collaboration with marketing heads and newspaper sales teams to develop marketing and promotional collateral in traditional and digital formats.

Heavily involved with design, implementation and roll-out of new online loyalty initiative, developed to increase newspaper subscription via a dedicated platform of exclusive reader rewards, offers, competitions and VIP events.

1986 - 2012
Paul Hathaway Associates

Initially a ‘bolt-on’ design and artwork service for Midlands advertising agencies and design studios, PHA grew to a full service design and

advertising consultancy, handling national and international interests for a mix of B2B/B2C clients. Working closely with Marketing, Brand and Sales teams tasked with implementing creative development for specific business goals and delivering a wide range of marketing and sales collateral from initial concepts through to final material.

1985 - 1986
Horizon Holidays Birmingham: Studio & Print Manager

Heading up a busy in-house operation consisting of designers/artists, typesetters and in-house print department. Tasked with design and

production of all consumer marketing/sales material; holiday brochures across all seasons, consumer advertising campaigns and POS marketing initiatives.

Role included negotiating directly with paper mills for purchase of stock for all printed material along with purchasing printed material from suppliers in UK and Europe. Commissioning photography and illustration.

1983 - 1985
Shipway Communications: Studio & Production Manager

Managing the day-to-day creative and production functions for what was Birmingham’s biggest independent advertising agency. Responsible for scheduling all creative and design work through the studio and overseeing to final production.

Tasked with producing all photography/illustration/print buying, with strict attention to budgetary and time-frame considerations.

Worked on a number of high profile national accounts across wide range of disciplines including TV.

1980 - 1983
Alexander Dickie Design: Studio Manager

Studio Manager. Head-hunted for small design practise and tasked with creating design studio facility from scratch. Responsible for recruitment, day to day creative and production work for a team of five designers/artists. Collaborating closely with the business founder and instrumental in formulating presentations for client pitches as well as general account management.

1977 - 1980
Rhodes Advertising: Finished artist/visualiser

Initially a junior role working closely with the studio manager and creative director to deliver creative design and artwork for a variety of clients but with a heavy bias towards property developers/housebuilders.

Promoted to Studio Manager in 1980.

Achievements

  • Outright winner of two graphic design awards. The Prince Michael Road Safety Design Award 2008 for 'Letters in the Snow' - a 28page booklet and CD aimed at improving road safety awareness for 3 to 5 year olds. And in 2010 for 'Four in a Row' - 16 page magazine designed for literacy classes with school years 4, 5 and 6.

  • Collaborative winner of Design and Art Direction award whilst working at Shipway Communications. Client North Birmingham Health Authority. Design award for poster raising awareness of the importance of vaccination to protect against rubella. "Sally's mum got measles - look what Sally got"

  • Leader of design team in implementation of on-line loyalty reward programme for series of regional newspapers across UK.

  • Cycling: including writing a regular cycling blog (paulandgaryaremad.blogsot.com) We have ridden many long distance routes and raised over £10,000 for UK charities.
